Contribution Margin Calculator

Contribution margin is what each sale leaves over after variable costs — price minus variable cost per unit — the amount that goes toward covering fixed costs and, once those are paid, profit.

Contribution margin per unit and as a ratio

Contribution margin starts as a simple subtraction: take the price a customer pays for one unit and remove the variable cost of producing and selling that unit. What remains is the contribution margin — the dollars each sale contributes toward your fixed costs and, after those are covered, your profit. Expressed as a fraction of price, the same figure becomes the contribution margin ratio, telling you what share of every sales dollar survives variable costs. A 25 dollar margin on a 40 dollar price is a 62.5 percent ratio. The dollar figure is most useful for per-unit decisions, while the ratio lets you compare products with very different price points on a common footing.

The formula

Contribution margin = Price − Variable cost

CM ratio = Contribution margin ÷ Price

where variable cost is only the cost that scales with each additional unit sold — materials, shipping, payment fees — and excludes the fixed overhead that stays the same regardless of volume.

Say a product sells for $40.00 and costs $15.00 in variable costs to produce and deliver. Here is what each sale actually contributes:

Why it is not the same as gross margin

It is easy to confuse contribution margin with gross margin, but they answer different questions. Gross margin subtracts the full cost of goods sold, which often mixes variable costs with allocated fixed production costs such as factory rent or salaried labor. Contribution margin is stricter: it removes only the variable costs that genuinely change with each unit, leaving fixed costs entirely out of the per-unit figure.
