The running cost of any appliance comes down to three numbers: how much power it draws, how long you use it, and what you pay for electricity. Take the power in watts, divide by 1,000 to get kilowatts, and multiply by the hours of use to find the energy consumed in kilowatt-hours each day. Multiply that by your price per kWh and you have the daily cost — which this calculator then scales to a 30-day month and a 365-day year. The formula
Daily kWh = (watts ÷ 1000) × hours per day
Daily cost = daily kWh × price per kWh
Monthly = daily cost × 30 · Yearly = daily cost × 365
where watts is the appliance’s power rating and theprice per kWh is the rate on your utility bill. Dividing watts by 1,000 converts power to kilowatts so it lines up with how energy is billed.

Watts versus kilowatt-hours
Watts and kilowatt-hours are easy to confuse but measure different things. Watts are power — the instantaneous rate at which a device pulls electricity. Kilowatt-hours areenergy — power drawn over time, and the unit your utility actually charges for. A 1,000-watt appliance left on for one hour uses one kilowatt-hour; the same appliance run for ten hours uses ten. That is why both the wattage and the hours of use sit in the formula: a powerful device used briefly can cost less than a modest one running all day. To find an appliance’s wattage, look for the rating label on its back, base, or power cord; if only amps are listed, multiply amps by volts to get watts.
Standby and “vampire” power
Many devices keep drawing power even when switched off, as long as they stay plugged in — a load known as standby, phantom, or vampire power. Televisions on standby, set-top boxes, game consoles, smart speakers, and idle phone chargers each sip only a few watts, but running continuously around the clock those watts accumulate into real kilowatt-hours over a year.
